CHAPTER 12
âMy mother was one of your people.â
I couldnât keep my eyes off Maxim. I followed his every move while he paced across the sitting room in my quarters, his every shift and expression.
I had not changed. I had not dared to walk away from him. I sat on the settee in the gown and jewels he had chosen. And fires burned on each end of the roomâbright and hot.
And still, the shadows filled the space, lining the walls, stretching silently and solemnly as if rapt on Maximâs every word.
âMy mother was a Radiant.â
I fought not to shake my head. There was not a spark of Light in him anywhere. At least not in the sense I was used toânot in the way I would expect from the child of a Radiant.
Maxim had told me once that all beings carried a certain amount of Light. And I had taken his words to heart. But he was consumed by Darkness as far as I could tell.
However, I said nothing. I would not interrupt. I wanted to hear all he had to say.
So in the Dark Manor, high up on the fifth floor of the ancient and empty home, I sat and listened as Maxim told me a story.
âHer name was Isadora. She sat in the loft of her familyâs barn one night. She liked to sit there with the hatches thrown open, while watching the starry skies, letting her feet swing from the ledge.
âAnd her family thought her odd for it. Being of your kind, they could not understand the appeal the night held for her.
âOne evening, as she sat out in the barn admiring the heavens, she sang a song. And when she came to the end of it, she found a man standing in front of the barn gazing up at her.
âThere was a certain quality to the night, she would often say. The night possessed an allure the day could never match. There was a mystery to it. A secret. The day will show you all, but the night keeps much hidden. The day, she claimed, was prideful. Arrogant. Intent on blazing the brightest and blocking out all else. The night, however, was humble and as a result infinitely more powerful.
âThe qualities she found aweing in regard to the night, she could see in the man standing before her. She did not know his identity, but she knew he was someone immense. And when he spoke, she knew his words were the truest she would ever hear.
âHe was the night personified.
âHe told her that he had left this world long ago. He told her that he had returned for one night. He was walking the forests of the world when he heard her song.
âHe looked at her in a way no other had. And he told her he could see her for what she was. He knewâhad he been able to stay for more than a single nightâthat he would love her. And he invited her to walk through the forest with him.
